Tollcross Millennium Banner
Tollcross Millennium Banner - Celebrates the History of Tollcross and Fountainbridge
The history starts at the left-hand side with the green fields of the market gardens that used to be the 'bread basket' of Edinburgh. It moves on to the industrialisation of the area showing the canal, rubber works and brewery.
The famous Tollcross Clock is depicted in the middle of the banner and it is showing 5 to 7 because that was the time the rubber works hooter sounded every morning to call the workers. The three arches of the Edinburgh Meat Market and the crane at the end depicts the present developments as Tollcross changes once again to become the financial centre of Edinburgh.
The banner also shows the cultural roots that still abound in Tollcross, both theatre and cinema. The King's, Lyceum and Cameo etc. are shown.
