The Capital could earn a £2.45 billion windfall if the city council rubberstamps an expansion of Edinburgh's flagship conference centre this week.

If the £85 million enlargement plans are granted on Thursday, Edinburgh International Conference Centre Ltd will begin formal talks to build an additional two floors of function space totalling 13,844 sq ms. The economic boost to the Capital has been calculated over 30 years.

Construction could begin in four weeks and would be due for completion by December 2012.
