Dope scuppers an American dream

A former student who says he set up a cannabis farm in a bid to fund a move to California to join his American girlfriend saw his plan literally go up in smoke.

Callum Ross was caught after electrical equipment used to grow the drug plants started a blaze and firefighters were called to his Tollcross flat.

Now the 26-year-old is set to be prevented from joining his long-term girlfriend, Isabella Chaussy, after pleading guilty to two charges of possessing cannabis and two more of being concerned in its supply.

Ross told police officers he was hoping to make enough profit to bankroll the trip but his solicitor told Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday that the "insane plan" "went up in smoke".
