Developer brews up plans for student flats

Plans for student flats on the old Fountain Brewery site look set to win approval.

Fountain North Limited has submitted the plans for managed student flats for rent at the Springside mixed use development.

It is expected to create accommodation for around 320 students.

The rooms would replace a block of residential flats supposed to be created on the site.

Planning officials said the flats would mean 32.6 per cent of residents in the surrounding area would be students - which is above the 30 per cent guidelines - but John Bury, the city council's head of planning, said it means "the overall objectives of creating a mixed-use development will still be achieved".

Councillors will make a final decision on the proposals on Wednesday, 6th April at 10.00am.
