Derek Riordan in court over assault charges

posted 8 May 2012, 06:58 by Tollcross Junction

Former Hibs star Derek Riordan was set to appear in court today to face charges of assaulting a door steward at a city nightclub.

The 29-year-old was arrested and charged by police in the early hours of yesterday morning following a disturbance at HMV Picture House, Lothian Road.

Riordan, who joined St Johnstone in March on a short-term deal until the end of the season, spent yesterday in the cells at St Leonards police station awaiting his appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. The court was closed for the bank holiday, and he is set to appear today from custody.

Riordan was the only arrest made by police during the incident, which came just hours after he appeared as a substitute at Tynecastle during his team’s 2-0 defeat.

A police spokeswoman said: “A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged assault and breaches of the peace. He is scheduled to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.”
