Cruise charity launches new boat for disabled

A charity that offers free canal cruises for the disabled says it is expanding its service by launching a new vessel.

The Seagull Trust, which provides inland waterway cruises, introduced new boat, St John Edinburgh, at Falkirk.

The trust enjoyed a record year in 2010 with more than 22,500 passengers using the service, prompting top brass to source extra boats.

International charity The Order of St John, stumped up the bulk of the cash to fund the boat, which will be based at Ratho and expected to go into service in the coming weeks. A naming ceremony has been pencilled in for later in the summer.

A spokesperson said: "With reduced funding in the wider environment, the demand from community groups is growing, and sadly for many, a cruise aboard a Seagull Trust Cruises boat too often represents a rare day out. To enable Seagull trust Cruises to sustain its work the charity continues to seek both volunteers and donors."
