Crossing gets long-awaited green light

posted 21 Mar 2009, 16:08 by David Rintoul

A PEDESTRIAN crossing which became a "laughing stock" has finally been switched on – more than two months after it was completed.

The pelican crossing in the Grassmarket, near Candlemaker Row, is now working, after being changed to fit in with disability regulations.

Contractors had been forced to dig it up and move paving slabs last month after finding it contravened legislation.

Bill Cowan, who owns nearby Costume HaHa, said: "We're pleased it's finally been switched on, but it's a shame people have had to wait so long."

Jos Bastiaansen, chairman of the Grassmarket Traders' Association, said: "The crossing was becoming quite a laughing stock."
