Craftsmen to carve out a second life for trees

Six elm trees growing in a city park are to be turned into handmade furniture by craftworkers after succumbing to Dutch elm disease.

The trees, which were planted around 150 years ago on the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links, were due to be felled by the city council to prevent the spread of the disease. But rather than sell, burn or dispose of the wood the council is to donate it to the Scottish Furniture Makers Association.

Members of the group will then use it to create specially-designed furniture which will go on show at the Dovecot Studios next October.
