The Capital's flagship conference centre is set to announce a number of job cuts as it battles against the economic downturn.

The Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) is preparing to make a number of positions redundant, thought to include a senior director.

It comes at a time when it is suffering from the impact of a global decline in the number of events being arranged in the corporate market.

It revealed a £601,130 loss for the 2007 financial year and a similar level of loss is expected to have been suffered in 2008.

There is also still uncertainty about when a proposed £80 million extension to the EICC will get under way. The extension is already more than two years behind schedule.

A spokesman for the EICC said: "Clearly, there is a global economic crisis and there are a number of challenges that we are facing.

"But we understand the challenges and we have to do what we can to overcome them."
