A leading Russian conductor has cancelled his appearance in a Festival concert to fight charges of sexually assaulting a teenage boy in Thailand.

Mikhail Pletnev has withdrawn from the International Festival this year, the festival organisers said yesterday. He was due to conduct Russian National Orchestra, which he founded, isn the Usher Hall on 19th August.

Orchestra regular Andrey Boreyko, described as "one of the most exciting and dynamic conductors to emerge from eastern Europe in recent years", will take over the concert.

"Andrey has worked with the Russian National Orchestra on a number of occasions to great acclaim, and we look forward to welcoming him to the Festival for the first time," a Festival spokeswoman said.
