City wants action over 'party flats'

posted 17 Aug 2009, 03:31 by David Rintoul

City council chiefs are to highlight the problem of Edinburgh's so-called "party flats" to the Scottish Government.

Residents plagued by revellers renting city flats for stag and hen weekends have been campaigning for new regulations to tackle the problem. But so far, ministers have insisted councils already have all the powers they need.

Last month the Evening News revealed the government's consultation on its forthcoming Housing Bill makes no mention of party flats.

But now councillors have agreed to raise the issue.

The city's health, social care and housing committee accepted an amendment from Labour councillor Lesley Hinds calling for the issue to be specifically addressed in the council's submission.

Cllr Hinds said: "It is clear from talking to those affected that there is a real need for action on this issue."

And Edinburgh Central Labour MSP Sarah Boyack, said: "The SNP's housing minister Alex Neil must take this issue seriously."
