City pair join Brussels climate change protest

posted 10 Mar 2009, 13:27 by David Rintoul

A PAIR of Edinburgh protesters were among a team of activists who chained themselves to the gates of the European Council building in Brussels today.

Dave O'Carroll, 31, from Tollcross and Alice Hoeper, 34 from Canonmills were part of 340 Greenpeace volunteers trying to prevent European finance ministers leaving their meeting until they agreed to pledge significant funding so that developing countries can tackle climate change.

The activists, from all over Europe, are demanding that European countries take the lead on real action to tackle climate change.

They say this year is a crucial year for the climate culminating with the talks in Copehagen in December.

Mr O'Carroll said: "Leading climate scientists say we have only 93 months to start reducing, rather than increasing emissions.

"Politicians don't seem to be listening, and certainly don't represent me so now is the time for me to take a stand and take action against climate change".
