City float plan to create 'canal quarter'

A "canal quarter" is set to be created as part of an ambitious plan to revitalise Edinburgh's waterways.

Council bosses want to promote development along the Union Canal with a series of changes in the city centre, Wester Hailes and Ratho.

Key to the plan is encouraging new offices, housing, pubs and restaurants at Edinburgh Quay in Fountainbridge to help create a new "Little Venice".

Development around the site has stalled due to the recession, but council chiefs hope the area can provide the springboard for a new lease of life along the length of the waterway.

The new quarter would stretch from Harrison Park in Merchiston to the Lochrin Basin at Fountainbridge.
