City faced with repair bill for kirk

Repairs to a disused Tollcross church could cost the taxpayer thousands of pounds after the owners left it disused for decades.

If the owners of Lauriston United Presbyterian Church on Lauriston Place do not carry out emergency repairs on the building by the end of this month, council workers will be given the go-ahead to force entry and make the building weatherproof.

The church was bought by the Arab Social League of Edinburgh in 1982 for conversion into a community centre, but has sat empty ever since.

After years of campaigning by local groups to see the category C listed building brought back into use, the League announced in December that it was transferring ownership of the building to a new charity, the Edinburgh Arab Scotland Trust, or EAST, which would use it as a community centre.
