City Council ditches plan to show World Cup

A giant television screen in Edinburgh city centre has been labelled an "expensive vanity project" after council chiefs decided to pull the plug on showing the World Cup.

The city council has spent much of this week in discussions with the police over whether to screen the tournament, but decided against it just hours before kick-off in yesterday's opening game.

The police said screening the matches in Festival Square would have sparked antisocial behaviour and required the closure of Lothian Road.

But there was criticism of the council, which pays for the running of the screen, for wasting money on the giant TV set.
