City conference centre back to drawing board

posted 10 Mar 2009, 19:57 by David Rintoul

THE Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) has been forced back to the drawing board over long-awaited plans for an underground extension to the complex.

Fresh plans have had to be drawn up for the £84 million scheme aimed at halting the capital's slide down the global conference league after two developers previously involved in the project pulled out.

New designs for the project, which will see an eight-storey office block built to help finance the underground arena, were unveiled yesterday by the EICC, which hopes to secure planning permission within the next few months.

The project is already running three years behind schedule.
