Cities spice up for great chilli cook-off

Turning 21 is one of those momentous events when you get handed a cacophony of plastic silver keys and several bottles of anything labelled 'percent proof' to help you wash away the final years of your youth in style.

But if you happen to be the brain child of the top local chilli voyeurs Lupe Pintos, a bottle of bubbly and some party poppers isn't quite going to cut it in the quest to have the hottest birthday party in town.

Two decades back Dougie Bell started a wholesale business distributing tortilla chips, refried beans and Monterey Jack cheese in Edinburgh.

Our spice loving selves lapped it up, swallowing more than just the chilli, but the entire chilli education that Dougie and his helpers had for us.
