Children's Burma book on the shelves

posted 1 Jun 2009, 03:11 by David Rintoul

School children have created a book depicting the lives of young Burmese refugees.

Our Burma Book is the result of work by pupils from five primary schools in the capital – Balgreen, Forthview, Pirniehall, St Mary's Leith and Tollcross.

The children have made etchings and drawings based on the daily lives of pupils at three Burmese refugee schools on the Thai-Burma border.

The link came about after human rights campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi was given the freedom of Edinburgh in 2005.

This prompted Forthview Head Teacher Sheila Laing to contact Burmese schools through the Global Schools Partnership.

She said: "This initiative has given the pupils a real understanding of life in Burma and issues such as the plight of refugees in a country where there's no democracy."

A thousand copies of the book were printed in Thailand with 500 being sent over to Edinburgh.
