Castle wall planned to protect visitors

For centuries Edinburgh Castle’s imposing walls have stood to offer protection to its inhabitants from any outside threat. Now the landmark’s latest £1 million addition is to turn this premise completely on its head, with a new three-metre high wall being built to protect passers-by and tourists from falling rocks.

The 170 metre-long wall along Johnston Terrace is designed to guard against loose rocks falling from the basalt cliff face.

Up to a quarter of the carriageway will be lost to allow the £2000 -a-metre structure to be created.
