More than 30 teams made some waves at the Canal Festival's raft race at the weekend.

Budding sailors attempted to make it down the waterway on homemade craft after city author and canal enthusiast Ian Rankin officially launched Saturday's annual event.

Those that managed to avoid ending up in the drink were treated to one at the end, and enjoyed a barbecue, live music and dance.

Councillor Tim McKay, the council's canal champion, said: "The Union Canal running through Edinburgh really is a hidden asset."
