Canal festival sheds light on graverobbers

posted 25 Jun 2009, 04:15 by David Rintoul

The murky history of infamous graverobbers Burke and Hare will be explored as part of the first festival celebrating the Union Canal.

Organised by the Waterways Trust Scotland, the Edinburgh Canal Festival hopes to get to the bottom of stories surrounding the waterway.

Karen Moore, development director for the Waterways Trust Scotland, said: "This festival will really showcase all the Union Canal has to offer, right in the heart of the city.

"The Union Canal is steeped in history and we aim to entertain people on the walks with the interesting stories. My personal favourite is Burke and Hare's connection with the canal.

"There is also a wealth of animals and plants which are unique to the canal-side and the walks offer people a chance to really spot the beauty of the canal."

The Edinburgh Canal Festival Feet First Walk takes place on Saturday, meeting at 11.30am at Leamington Lift Bridge, or at 1:30pm outside Water of Leith Conservation Trust at Slateford.
