Burke and Hare back from the dead

posted 22 Feb 2010, 18:20 by David Rintoul

It was a case of lights, camera, action in Edinburgh yesterday as filming began on a new drama featuring the infamous murderers Burke and Hare.

The eerie atmosphere of the 19th-century Old Town was recreated with smoke machines billowing fake smog around Old Fishmarket Close.

Director John Landis, famous for The Blues Brothers and Michael Jackson's Thriller video, has compiled an all-star cast.

Stars include Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Tom Wilkinson and Isla Fisher, as well as Sir Christopher Lee, Reece Shearsmith, Tim Curry, Bill Bailey and Ronnie Corbett.

William Burke and William Hare carried out at least 17 murders in Edinburgh from November 1827 to October 1828, supplying bodies to Dr Robert Knox, a private anatomy lecturer.

Edinburgh University was renowned for medical science in the 19th century, but a fall in executions had seen the demand for cadavers rise dramatically.
