Bouncer dies after incident at nightclub

A 25-year-old man is due to appear in court today in connection with a disturbance at a nightclub which happened shortly before a bouncer died of an apparent heart attack.

Ray Bennett, 48, from Liverpool, a bouncer with Glasgow company SGL security, was allegedly assaulted at Karma Knights club on Lothian Road yesterday before taking ill, it was reported.

He was treated by paramedics and police before being taken to hospital, where he died.

A spokesman for the nightclub owners Helena Leisure said: "Police are investigating fully as Ray was engaged in his duties as a door supervisor at the time he was taken ill."

A police spokesman said: "The incident happened around 1:40am after an alleged disturbance involving a nightclub patron.

"A 25-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged disturbance that preceded the incident."
