Bloodbath discovered at blazing home

Police were today expected to formally launch a murder inquiry after a man was found apparently "battered to death" and a woman left seriously injured at a flat in one of Edinburgh's most exclusive neighbourhoods.

Firefighters were called to a blaze in Chalmers Crescent, the Grange, at 8:20am yesterday. They found a smoke-filled flat caused by a fire that had been burning for some time and two people lying unconscious and surrounded by blood.

Officially, police said last night that they were treating the fire as "suspicious". However, sources said a murder investigation was under way.
