Bike thieves out in force

posted 18 Dec 2009, 11:52 by David Rintoul

Police in the Marchmont area have warned cyclists to be on their guard against thieves after an "unacceptably high" number of bike thefts last month.

Community beat officer PC Yocksan Bell said that 16 bikes were stolen during November, with only one of the cases solved so far.

PC Bell said the figure was "well above" the monthly average for the area, adding that "all bikes stolen were either not secured or secured only with a cable lock which are notoriously easy to cut".

He added that owners should use accredited "Sold Secure" locks, and use a combination of a cable lock and D-lock whenever possible.

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
