Bets off as bookmaker shuts down

A bookmakers which provoked a storm of protest when it opened on one of Edinburgh's most eclectic shopping streets has closed after barely a year in business.

Morrisons bookmakers gained permission to open the shop on Bruntsfield Avenue in 2007, despite the city council receiving the most ever objections for that kind of application.

But the business, in the heart of a district comprising mainly independent shops, has shut and the owners are looking for a new enterprise to occupy the site.

Many local shop owners and residents who fought against the application said they were delighted that it had closed down.

They said not only did it bring down the tone of the street, but that it did not contribute to the diverse nature of Bruntsfield and Morningside's commercial theme. They also sounded warnings that a similar business would not be welcome at the former site of Greig Firth hairdressers.

Other traders did say, however, that an empty unit wasn't in anyone's interests.
