Barbecue revellers face a grilling in Meadows

The number of official barbecue spots on the Meadows has been almost doubled in an attempt to stop people burning the grass.

Ten additional concrete barbecue areas have been created for this summer, bringing the total across the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links to 21.

The barbecue sites were introduced by the city council in May last year along with signs urging people to use the slabs rather than placing their barbecues directly on the grass.

At the end of the summer, it was found that the number of burnt patches of grass more than halved to 78 as a result of the initiative.
