Backers flock to sign Save the Odeon petition

HUNDREDS of people have signed a petition to save a historic cinema, just a few days after it was set up.

Trainspotting actor Ewen Bremner is supporting the campaign to preserve the former Odeon on South Clerk Street, which is set to be partially demolished and converted into a luxury hotel.

Now more than 1350 people are calling for Historic Scotland to object to the plans, and pass it to Scottish ministers for a public inquiry.

They say the B-listed art-deco building is one of the best-surviving cinemas in Edinburgh.

Campaign organiser John Need helped set up the petition on Wednesday.

He is also setting up a charity, with the aim of buying the building.

"This could be turned into an economically viable and vibrant space for the community," he said.

Developer Duddingston House Properties says there is no feasible alternative to converting the building though.

The company's plans, which would preserve the facade and entrance foyer, have already been approved by the city council.
