Anger as works' staff use Meadows as car park

Campaigners have hit out after part of the Meadows was turned into a "temporary car park" during work on a revamp of the city's busiest park.

A major refurbishment of the main path through the Meadows has seen much of Middle Meadow Walk fenced off.

But up to ten cars a day have been parked behind the temporary fencing, with many of them thought to belong to contractors working on the £60,000 project.

The scheme will see Middle Meadow Walk refurbished and resurfaced, along with a renewal of its gullies to prevent flooding.

Work is focused on a section of the park where a number of paths cross – just south of the new Sainsbury's supermarket – which is popular with both pedestrians and cyclists.

Campaigners and local councillors today accused the council's contractors of using the Meadows as their own personal car park.
