He is the best-selling author who was famously inspired by the quirky characters of everyday Edinburgh.

Now Alexander McCall Smith, whose 44 Scotland Street stories were first published in The Scotsman, has been immortalised in his native city.

The law professor-turned-author has been chosen to be honoured by the city council in a brand new thoroughfare in the city.

A quote from McCall Smith about his fondness for Edinburgh has been engraved into a 30-metre long “art wall” which has been created as part of a development to extend the Edinburgh International Conference Centre in the capital.
