Alexa drums up support for amputees

posted 5 Oct 2009, 03:59 by David Rintoul

Two-year-old Alexa Anderson's tiny feet make their own contribution to a cumulative 500-mile walk for charity at the weekend.

Fundraisers, politicians and celebrities walked a combined distance of 500 miles around the city as part of the Miles For Smiles challenge on Saturday.

The aim of the walk was to support amputees and other disabled people in Malawi and Zambia, with a particular focus on the delivery and development of prosthetic services.

In Malawi and Zambia thousands of men, women and children lose limbs, or the use of them, due to disease, accident or poverty.

Many lose their livelihoods, homes or families and some of them die.

The walk was inspired by The Proclaimers' song I'm Gonna Be (500 miles).
