It is one of the Capital's most recognisable features and has stood proud at the entrance to the Meadows for 125 years.
Now an appeal to preserve the whale's jawbone, which lends its name to the park's Jawbone Walk, has been launched.
The appeal launch at the jawbone on Friday afternoon also marked the 125th anniversary of the opening of the 1886 International Exhibition of Edinburgh in the Meadows by Prince Albert Victor.
