1870:
David Octavius Hill, pioneering Scottish photographer, died. Born in 1802, Hill is often credited with being the first person to use photography as an aid to painting. Together with Robert Adamson he produced more than 1,500 photo-portraits of Scotland's great and good.

Sir John Steell (1804-91)
Sir John was responsible for many of the statues you see today in the centre of Edinburgh - Sir Walter Scott beneath his monument in Princes Street, The Duke Of Wellington opposite the Balmoral Hotel, Prince Albert in Charlotte Square and many more. Sir John is buried in an unmarked grave, enclosed by iron railings, in the Old Calton Cemetery.
