the Scottish Parliament reconvened with Dr Winifred M Ewing MSP as acting Presiding Officer. Her first words to the Parliament were - "The Scottish Parliament which adjourned on the 25th of March in the year 1707 is hereby reconvened."

Some interesting facts about Edinburgh
- A number of cities are twinned with Edinburgh including Nice, Munich, Florence, San Diego and Kiev.
- Some of Edinburgh's famous sons include Alexander Graham Bell, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Walter Scott and more recently, Sir Sean Connery.
- The first Edinburgh Military Tattoo took place in 1950 and not one single performance has been cancelled in all this time!
- Edinburgh became a town and Royal Burgh in the 12th century.
- Edinburgh Castle has stood guard high over the city since 1085. It has a chilling past as it was once home to a prison and was the scene of torture for many centuries.
- Founded in 626 by Edwin of Northumbria, Edinburgh's name means 'fortress of the hill slope'.
- The population of Edinburgh is around 450,000 and it covers an area of around 100 sq miles.
- In 1846 Edinburgh was joined by rail to London.
