Sir Alexander Burnes, Scottish explorer and public official, was born. A noted explorer of Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and southern Russia, he was author of 'Map of Central Asia' and 'Travels into Bokhara.'

The bronze plaque reads:

Precise Location It is located at Lothian Road / Festival Square at the south east corner of Square, on the west side of Lothian Road.
Description
Two bronze figures. A standing woman dressed in knee-length dress, headscarf and shoes. Has right arm around boy who cowers at her side. Behind them, four corrugated metal sheets lean against a thin vertical pole. All are place on a thin plain bronze base.
