Sir Alexander Burnes, Scottish explorer and public official, was born. A noted explorer of Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and southern Russia, he was author of 'Map of Central Asia' and 'Travels into Bokhara.'

Cartouche with castle within medallion, spray of leaves emerging horizontally either side at bottom. The material is stone, possibly sandstone, and is rather cruedly painted grey.
In pediment above door of building in the old Washhouse.
