Sir Alexander Burnes, Scottish explorer and public official, was born. A noted explorer of Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and southern Russia, he was author of 'Map of Central Asia' and 'Travels into Bokhara.'

Precise Location On façade of Fire Station at junction of West Tollcross and Ponton Street.
Description Three-panel relief of sheet metal depicting central burning building flanked by 5 firemen and hose on left, 2 firemen and hoses on right. Images made with cut-out forms.
It is made of Stainless steel. (Some parts darkened.) Condition is good but dull and the surface is pitted in places.
