Sir Alexander Burnes, Scottish explorer and public official, was born. A noted explorer of Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and southern Russia, he was author of 'Map of Central Asia' and 'Travels into Bokhara.'

St David's Place, Terrace Named after the Church of the same name, the site of which is now occupied by a block of flats built in 1973.
St Peter's Buildings, Place Named after St Peter's United Free Church, now Viewforth Church.
Semple Street A brewery to the west corner of Semple and Morrison Streets was bought by John Semple in 1758, who in 1762 was succeeded by Robert Semple. The street was built at the turn of that century and, until the canal was filled in at this point, there was a wooden bridge over the water.
Previously called Slunk Street, this referred to the muddy and uneven nature of the road.
Spittal Street Built in 1835 and named after Sir James Spittal, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, between 1833-7.
