Derivation of Local Street Names |
Panmure Place This street was planned in the 1820s and was to be called Rigg Street after James Home Rigg (see Home Street) but was not built until after 1852, when the 2nd Earl of Panmure succeeded to that title and was, at the time, Parliamentary Secretary of War.
Ponton Street Named after Alexander Ponton, wright and surveyor who owned land in the area and was the architect of a block of houses erected on the west side of the street in 1766. Referred to as Ponton Street at least by 1790 (Population of St Cuthbert's).
His daughter Jean Stewart Ponton was married to Major James Weir, proprietor of the south lands of Tollcross at the turn of the 19th century.
Portsburgh Square Taken from Wester Portsburgh, the small burgh outside the West Port to the old town of Edinburgh.
