Sir Alexander Burnes, Scottish explorer and public official, was born. A noted explorer of Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and southern Russia, he was author of 'Map of Central Asia' and 'Travels into Bokhara.'

Derivation of Local Street Names |
Newport Street Built in 1855 and named after the second basin of the Union Canal called Port Hamilton built in 1823 after Port Hopetoun. No houses remain on this street and it is was redeveloped in the late 1980s. It is now part of the Millennium Walkway running down the side of the EICC.
