Sir Alexander Burnes, Scottish explorer and public official, was born. A noted explorer of Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and southern Russia, he was author of 'Map of Central Asia' and 'Travels into Bokhara.'

Derivation of Local Street Names |
Keir Street Originally only between Heriot Place and Graham Street both connecting to Lauriston Place but now including Graham Street. Named after Adam Keir who owned land in this part of Lauriston near the turn of the 18th century. In 1782 his house is described as 'to be let, a large and commodious house and offices built by Mr Keir and now possessed by Mr Graham.'
King's Bridge Built in 1827 in honour of King George IV who visited Edinburgh in 1822.
King's Stables Road, Lane From the 14th century Royal stables built by David II immediately outwith the modern Grassmarket. This road was previously called 'the Road to Queensferry' before Lothian Road was built, and continued across the modern West End of Princes Street to Queensferry Road. King's Stables Lane was called Tanner Street in 1784.
