Derivation of Local Street Names |
Dewar Place Built around 1817 after James Dewar, a mason living in Tobago Street, now off Morrison Street, Immediately to the east of Dewar Place but originally part of Morrison Street.
Dunbar Street Appearing on Kirkwood's map of 1817 the street does not appear to have been named until the late 1820s. A sasine of 1830 refers to two acres of land belonging to Adam Paterson 'fronting the street now called Dunbar Street'. As yet no explanation of the name has been found. It is possible that it was originally called Wellington Place. There are no longer any houses on this street off West Tollcross.
Drumdryan Street Named after the lands of Drumdryan, latterly owned by James Home Rigg whose property the road runs through. The name Drumdryan is Celtic in origin and denotes a row of Blackthorn trees.
Drumdryan House owned by Homes Rigg was approached by a lane of the same name and was situated between Tarvit, Drumdryan and Brougham Street and latterly was surrounded by the existing tenements there until it was demolished early last century.
