Derivation of Local Street Names |
The reasons why the streets in Edinburgh were so named have seldom been recorded. We have to rely to a great extent on interpretation and imaginative guesswork, although much of what we know about the names can be construed from the notes of the late Charles Boog Watson, who collected a vast amount of the supporting evidence which is used here. We have attempted to expand upon his work and other people's findings, but the derivations of some names are still unknown.
