Sir Alexander Burnes, Scottish explorer and public official, was born. A noted explorer of Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and southern Russia, he was author of 'Map of Central Asia' and 'Travels into Bokhara.'

Precise Location Opposite Grove Street on wall of Fountain Brewery.
Description East panel (left side when facing wall) Left panel: Oat houses, sheaves of barley, sacks of grain. Centre panel: 2 men shovelling barley in melt houses. Right panel: 2 men stirring grain in a mesh tin.
The relief is made of Bronze and is 22 metres long and 2 metres high and is in good condition.
It is one of a pair. The West Sculpture was removed to make way for a new entrance to the Brewery. But if you want to see what it looked like click here!
