£50,000 to replace railings taken from MeadowsPosted by : David on Mar 19, 2008 - 02:00 PM A lot of people gave up their pots and pans but...
CAMPAIGNERS have secured £50,000 to replace railings removed from the Meadows during the Second World War. The railings, which were taken away to be turned into munitions, have now been restored. Friends of the Meadows won funding from the city council and the organisation Waste Recycling Environmental Limited to replace the railings near Leven Terrace and those next to where Melville Drive meets Buccleuch Street. The campaigners are also hoping to install plaques to commemorate the installation of the new railings. The group's chairman, Peng Lee Yap, said: "The difficulty we had was knowing what the pattern was like, because the railings were all carted off during the war. "But in fact they were not used very much for munitions. A lot of people gave up their pots and pans but the quality of metalwork was too low. "These new railings give the ends of the Meadows the sense that you are actually entering a park." Previous Tollcross Articles
