Council is planning to bring in lime and oak trees

TREES are set to be replaced in the Grassmarket, after it emerged some of the existing ones have been damaged.

The city council is planning to bring in lime and oak trees to replace many of the poplars.

Cllr Phil Wheeler [3]

Councillor Phil Wheeler, the city's transport leader, said: "Some of the trees are not doing well in the conditions in the Grassmarket and others are becoming dangerous – especially during bad weather.

"It is highly likely that they will have to be replaced within the next ten years, but there is no guarantee that the necessary funding will be available to replace them then.

"Doing it now provides a guaranteed sustainable tree cover for the next generation and minimises future disruption.

"A lot of effort has gone into finding the most suitable replacement trees."

An information evening is being held in the Beehive Inn at 7pm today, where the plans for new trees will be on display to the general public.
