Essential Edinburgh would see businesses pay extra levy

THE final plan for a business improvement district (BID) in the Capital has been published and is to be sent to firms based in the city centre next week.

The city centre BID, branded Essential Edinburgh, would see all businesses between Princes Street and George Street pay an additional levy to fund improvements in the area. The full business case is being sent out ahead of a postal ballot scheduled for between April 11th and May 23rd.

The plan details five key areas on which the BID money – more than £900,000 a year – would be spent. Ideas include a team of "welcoming wardens", while cash would also be spent on marketing and annual events.

The cleanliness and attractiveness of the area would be a key focus, as well as more CCTV, improved lighting and transport wardens.
