CAMPAIGNERS have won their fight for road repairs which were preventing low-floored buses from using a popular city route to be carried out.

Disability action groups and politicians had called for action to be taken on the junction of Craighouse Gardens and Craighouse Road.

Lothian Buses had been unable to run low-floor buses on the number 23 service, which runs between Trinity and Craiglockhart, via Tollcross, because of the condition of the road.

Now the city council has passed a motion to carry out the work by the end of March, moving it ahead of dozens of other road repair jobs on the waiting list.

By 2010, Lothian Buses aims to replace its entire fleet with low-floor buses, which are easier for the elderly, wheelchair users and people with pushchairs.

However, the camber of the junction – opposite Napier University's Craighouse Campus – means they would be in danger of getting stuck or even tipping over.
