Appeal for man who stopped to help the victim
Police are appealing for a Good Samaritan who stopped to help a pensioner who was beaten up in Edinburgh on Saturday night (January 12th) to come forward.

The 66-year-old victim was attacked by a group of youths at around 11pm, in South Clerk Street.

He was making his way home when he was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched by the group, described as being between 16 to 20-years-old.

They ran off when a man, described as possibly having a Newcastle accent, stopped to help the victim.

Following the assault the victim attended Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he was treated for cuts and bruising to his face and head.

No further description is available of the man who stopped to help.

A police spokesman said: 'This was a cowardly and unprovoked assault on a pensioner, and we are extremely keen to trace those responsible.

'We are particularly keen to speak to the Good Samaritan who stopped to help the victim, as he may hold information vital to our enquiries.

'Anyone else who witnessed the assault, or who has any information that can help us track down the suspects, should contact police immediately.'

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
