Skyline views to be secure from development

Views from Meadows and Bruntsfield Links added...

ICONIC views of Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat and Craigmillar Castle have been given special status in plans to preserve the city's skyline.

Councillors voted to create special "planning corridors" to give more than 50 views protection from development. These were identified following a study of the skyline and a public exhibition.

As the News reported last week, three extra views of Salisbury Crags from the Southside, Edinburgh Castle from Waverley Bridge and the Castle from the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links were added in response to public demand.

More than 60 people put in special pleas for their favourite views to be included.

The move has delighted groups, including the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, which funded the initial study.

Andrew Holmes, Director of City Development

Andrew Holmes, director of city development, said: "The Skyline exhibition has been effective of raising people's awareness of how important the skyline is to Edinburgh. The vast majority of responses were positive."
